Tubing & Campground
No matter what level of whitewater kayaking you are at, the Green River has a section for you. The Lower Green is great for beginners, the Upper has a lot to offer intermediate paddlers, and the Narrows is a World Class section of Class V craziness.
Our Campground adjoins the Lower Green. The Lower is a mild section of whitewater that includes class 1 & 2 rapids. We send many smiling tubers down this section every day of the summer. It's also a great place to be introduced to whitewater paddling. The rapids are mild and the recovery pools below the major rapids are deep and friendly. Tubing is a great way to scout this section before your upcoming first decent.
The Upper Green is located upstream of the Narrows. It's about a 30 minute ride from our campground to the takeout and another 20-30 minute ride to the put in. This is a great place to step it up from the Class 2 grind. Many paddling clubs and individuals run this section every week. The three major features of this section are: Bayless Boof, Wanda's Hole, and Pinball. If your looking to try the Upper, it is strongly suggested that you go with someone who is qualified to take you and and knows your abilities. A local paddling club is great place to find a paddling buddy. The most difficult part of the Upper is the hike out, it's about a half mile going gradually up hill. It's also a "don't miss" takeout, because just downstream is where the Class V Narrows section begins.
The Green River Narrows
The Narrows is the section of the Green River between the Upper and the Lower. It consists of multiple Class 5 drops, people have died here. This is not a place to try out, this a place many paddlers work towards and study well in advance of their first decent. The "Big Three" rapids of the Narrows are "Go left and Die," "Gorilla," and "Sunshine." Many paddlers from around the world have made this decent. Every year since 1996, at high noon on the first Saturday in November, paddlers and spectators gather for The Green Race. This is the biggest, baddest creekboat race in the World. Paddlers navigate the meat of the narrows in a timed race for the title of "Green Race Champion." Winning the Green Race is bigger than winning a gold at the Olympics for a class V boater. The race draws a large audience and a full campground for us.
